The Art of Growing and Showing Antirrhinum 'snapdragon'
Antirrhinum. ‘Snapdragon’. This is the flower most amateur growers will admit to being there first love, but would not let the wife know that, their again the Hardy Border Snapdragon is very much like the misses, ‘once introduced to the garden is very difficult to get rid of.
As the blossoms fade in the autumn, you will think, it’s a pity to remove it for the winter, being an evergreen Hardy Border Plant. The Snapdragon is as tough as old boots, and given a mild stretch in winter will start to flower again, giving food to the foraging bees of early spring.
Its appearance does not improve with age; it loses it beauty in a different way from the gardener who tends it. While the chances are he with age develops rotundity, the snapdragon will undoubtedly become what is commonly and expressively termed "leggy".
Although we may at some time discard our unwanted snapdragon’s to the compost heap, that is not to say we have got rid of them completely. Look well around the garden, in the gaps in that wall on the roof. You might well spy a red snapdragon that has self seeded, also theirs a pink snapdragon growing in the rock garden, and be sure you never planted it there.
All these seedlings were delivered by the humble bumblebee when collecting nectar. My favourite was a yellow snapdragon growing 10 feet up a willow tree in a crevice. Look in all the most unlikely places you can think of and there is little doubt that you will find a few seedling snapdragons.
The snapdragon is a fine old plant, and you can scarcely have too many of them. The growing of snapdragons is very easy and can be raises by means of seed or cuttings. If by chance you sow some seeds and a particularly nice colour is produced, cuttings can be taken and rooted very easily, we have for many years now taken cuttings from a trailing orange snapdragon at our bungalow in Worcestershire u.k. We have 10 hanging baskets around the house all with orange snapdragons trailing down, the bees love them.
Last year I was asked to judge a village in bloom competition in Herefordshire u.k. This was in mid August, as we moved through the village I spotted a flash of colour, peering through the garden gates and over garden fences I caught site of four of the most beautiful flower beds I have ever seen, yes you’ve guessed, they were full of snapdragons, all colours you could imagine, pink snapdragon, mauve snapdragon, bronze snapdragon, yellow snapdragon in fact all the colours of the rainbow, what a sight. We revisited the village in October for the autumn show and the flowerbeds of snapdragons were still in wonderful bloom.
